Where To Live?
Sara and I are thinking of moving. We have our criteria as to which amenities we’d like to be close to. So I decided to take that criteria and set up a PostGIS database and start doing some analysis on it.
So, we’d like to live:
- Within 12Kms of Sara’s Work
- Within 1KM of a TTC Subway station or GO Train Station
- Within 3kms of a Good Life Fitness Gym
After plugging in the data, this is what I get:
Where all three circles intersect, that is the “sweet spot” of where to live. The large one being centred on Sara’s work, the second largest being a Good Life Gym and the smallest being a GO or TTC subway station.
Ideally I’d like to only show the areas that intersect, but my GIS-foo isn’t good enough to figure that out yet.
This map has actually taught us quite a bit. For example we never thought that living in Cooksville or Bramalea would satisfy our criteria. Not that we’d actually want to live there
As time permits, I’m going to refine the code and possibly allow other people to generate their own maps.
